Hope, is the single most amazing and at the same time terrifying invention that the human being has ever made.
The greeks has helped us to believe that with their democracy, an equal opportunity of shaping the society can be created, that everybody have the power to direct the society to an outcome that represents the interest of the many. We were so amazed by how new the idea was that from then until now we untiringly fight for it existence. Forgetting that the idea can be wrong.
Don’t get me wrong, i get why it is beautiful, the idea that every people have the same equal rights of speaking and doing stuff is just brilliant. IF and only if we are all at the same level of understanding.
Fact is, we aren’t.
We are so different in so many ways, even the way we walk is slightly different.
Not that i’m trying to convince you that there are no beauty in differences. In fact, this sole beauty is the reason why i am writing this piece.
A debate, a discussion, a rational understanding are met only if the people who are talking have enough intelligence to respect the differences in between them and to set aside personal, group, and emotional agenda aside to achieve the mutual benefits of the many. This means that when somebody from country A lets say this A means japan, are trying to convince other country from south east Asia, they do not need to give them millions of dollars just to convince them to support their side of the argument. Instead, it means that when country A is giving an argument, country B can sit back and listen, give them their opinion, then both of them can discuss the merits in their arguments and then discuss the ideal solutions to their discussion that can meet the interest of both parties. Not to meet the interest of only one particular party.
Of course i’m just a naive 20 year old that knows nothing about democracy and how to run a country or a group in this matter.
But then again its silly how this young kid can be truer than bunch of politicians out there in this world.
Seeking for democracy on this era is like asking for an “african american” president for US at the period of 1990s. They are just not ready for that kind of phenomenon to happen at the time being. Hell, they’re not even ready now. Not most of them at least.
What it yields then is a notion of what is right and what is wrong, a social responsibility, norms. something that cannot be put into the law, but is to dangerous for the society to bare that it became taboo. Democracy has give the power over a society to the society itself despite of their readiness of doing so.
Such a thing is happening all over Indonesia. Where democracy just become a vehicle for people to escape from their fear, their risk, and create the hope of better future.
There are millions of idiotic scum that use the name of democracy to gain benefits for themselves. Not knowing that they are just taken benefits by someone bigger above them.
Exhibit A: the “Defender Front of Islam” in Indonesia (no offense)
Democracy creates hope for people that are desperate.
And hope, is the single biggest bullshit in the entire universe.
A human being have the biggest hope of living a happy live, which means money, prosperity, easy life. And sadly people has mistaken this notion and hope and put it inline together with dreams. Hope is dream’s biggest enemy, hope stops dream from coming true. its their Kryponyte.
Hope leads people to school, to library, to good grades, to those boring office job, to the retirement plans, reasonably priced car, mortgage, retirement plans, war. Hope makes people afraid of not making it in the future that they leave their dreams. Hope keeps you on the ground, Hope keeps you in the comfort zone. It gives you something so comfortable and so close to happiness that you are willing to sacrifice the dream you are holding on for that close shot at happiness.
But what it will give you is just a glance at it, not quite the happiness, not the real thing. People are too afraid to let go of their hope, to leave their job, to start working on their dreams and most of the times even to forget about their dreams, because at least they can catch a glimpse of the happiness they’ve been dreaming about. Hope jail you inside a box.
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
For the whole lifetime of my life, i’ve been chasing that hope, that small shot of seeing what the happiness will look like, and i am still on that path. i can’t abandoned it, i’m halfway on my course, and so do you. But its never to late, the ship is not moving that past, it never has. What we do is making it look like its moving fast, but really it is just our own fear. I’m not doing it right away, i’ll still stuck in this ship for quite some times, but i will jump out. And so should you. Our dream is uniquely ours, it is distinct from one another, it wasn’t just that one ideal thing, it never is. And it is just the case of whether you are crazy enough to pursue it, or not.
“When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family life, have fun, save a little money.
That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is – everything around you that you call life, was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.
The minute that you understand that you can poke life and actually something will, you know if you push in, something will pop out the other side, that you can change it, you can mold it. That’s maybe the most important thing. It’s to shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you’re just gonna live in it, versus embrace it, change it, improve it, make your mark upon it.”
